Uganda is the Home to the majority mountain Gorillas with 13 groups being open to visitors to trek, the 12 groups live in Bwindi Forest and 1 group lives in Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Only 8 people visit one Gorilla Group, this counts to 104 Gorilla permits obtainable each day.
Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is the only Government body that is accountable to issuing the Ugandan Gorilla permits. The body issues permits to Tour Operators or to travelers themselves. UWA is a government body that runs tourism and wildlife in Uganda; they operate in a sense of conservation, maintenance and management. As a trusted Tour Operator, we recommend an early Gorilla permit booking where our client is required to at least book for a permit like 4 or 5 months before the real trekking dates. It is therefore advisable for the guest to send at least 40% of the payment. This helps to cater for the Gorilla permits and accommodations prior arrival.
Note that Gorillas are in different groups and they live in different sectors of Bwindi Jungle, the earlier the traveler pays the better the accommodation booking which is normally best for the Gorilla group to be trekked. It’s always a nice experience but it’s awesome if clients trek a group that resides near the accommodation.
A Ugandan Gorilla permit goes for $600 for Foreign Non-Residents, $500 for Foreign Residents and 250,000 UGX for East African Citizens. These prices run through out the year (January to December).Gorilla permits are no longer on discount in Uganda as it was previously during low seasons. With effect from 2018, Gorilla permits shall not be on promotion in Uganda. The high and low seasons shall have their Gorilla permits at the same price. UWA stopped these promotional permits in November 2017.
Travelers Gorilla permits are firmly valid for the dates on them and on that same date a traveler has to watch the Gorillas for only 1 hour while in their presence. Note that your 1 hour Gorilla Permit validity does not include the hours you spend while trekking but only 1 hour from the time a visitor meets the Gorillas watching them up-close in their own natural environment.
